The term “Firewall” refers to the software or program designed with the express purpose of adding security to a computer by detecting and avoiding ill-intentioned access to the operating system or any of its applications.
Firewalls watch for the attempts to access a computer from exterior communication channels. If a computer is connected to the Internet, be it by cable or wireless, there always is the possibility that a person or program may seek to gain access to the computer via this communication channel. If the equipment is not protected, and access is obtained, it is possible that the ill-intentioned outsider may gain control of the operating system, steal sensitive information and even use the computer to undertake illicit transactions.
If the computer is protected by a Firewall, these risks are reduced dramatically and the equipment may be considered “Safe”.
The Firewall is a fundamental piece of security software that all home or business computers must have installed, along with the Antivirus and Antispyware programs, in order to prevent the theft of sensitive information and unwanted access to personal files.
